Portrush Cavalcade 2013
4th August 2013
The East Antrim Old Vehicle Club's Annual charity run, The Portrush Cavalcade, was held on the 4th August 2013. The event, this year was raising money for the Alzheimer's Society and was sponsored by E.A.Davies Insurance Ltd.
Nearly 100 Vehicles assembled from 8am at Mossley Mill where they were welcomed by the current Mayor, Fraser Agnew.
After a hearty breakfast, courtesy of Newtownabbey Borough Council, the cars left the mill at 10:45am in a convoy heading for Portrush.
With the sun shining and the roads clear we could ask for a better day. The only minor problem on the run was at Ballymena where road works effectively split the Cavalcade in two with some cars getting caught in the wrong lane and ending up taking the diversion through the town.
On arrival at the Dunluce Centre the cars were parked up for an afternoon static display. Getting the cars parked was made easier by the split in the cavalcade at Ballymena so took the pressure off the marshals waiting to get them in place.
With nearly 100 cars, where else will you find such a diverse range of cars both in age and make running in convoy.
There were two breakdowns on the along the way, but they were quickly sorted by the AA men that accompanied us throughout the day.
A packed lunch was supplied by the club to set us up for a relaxing afternoon. The crowds that came to see the cars, where both knowledgeable and inquisitive and seemed to enjoy the day.
At approximately 4:30pm, the cavalcade headed for the Royal Court Hotel for the evening meal, ballots and Finishers Awards.
The Winners of the Ballot where, 1st Prize, (a Weekend for 2 at the Royal Court Hotel) Zeth Weir. 2nd Prize, (32" LED Television) Ian Carson and 3rd prize, (a meal for 2 at the Clarion Hotel, Carrickfergus) Suzi Watson.
Many thanks to Ian Carson, the winner of the TV, who kindly put it up for auction, which brought in another £220 for the charity fund.
The evening concluded with the handing out of the finisher's awards, which this year was a silver platter engraved with the EAOVC logo.
The club would like to thank all those that took part, and the advertisers for helping us raise money for this year's charity The Alzheimer's Society. The day was a great success and we all look forward to next year when we will do it all again for another charity.
